How to hook-up a Vibroplex (or any other type of keying device) to a Clansman-style radio. Just stick two pins into the 7 pole plug at positions E and F and you're in business. 45 wpm on a PRC320 still sounds fine and makes perfect code!

I'm very excited! Earlier this week I made several qsos from my shack, this afternoon from my garden I made two qsos with the PRC320 on the supplied battery. RX6LX, Vasily in Moscow and SM5DGA, Jan. Good reports and very easy to work with only a whip-antenna of 2,4 mtrs long and 2,5 watts output! Thanks for the qsl-card, Jan! Yours is on the way!

And now for something completely different:
This is the UK/RT320, aka PRC320 is an HF Manpack transceiver: 2 tot 29,9 mHz, output low 2,5 watts, output high about 25 watts. Modes: AM, CW wide, CW narrow (270 Hz!) and USB. The radio can operate on a base-antenna-system, but it came with several assorted antennas like a longwire, dipole and a 2,4 mtr whip. With the whip, longwire and dipoles you can use the built/in tuner. There´s also a very good cwfilter (width: 270 Hz), really does wonders for the rx. It takes a bit of getting used to the high-pitched side-tone of 2000 Hz. Don't know why they did that?.

Each year the MRHS commemorates 12 July 1999, the date on which the supposed last commercial message was sent in the US. On that date we pick up the thread, keep the faith and maintain the traditions of maritime radio communications so that the skills and traditions of all the radiotelegraphers who came before us will be maintained.

Update!
The recently aquired keys are both very good! The Magnetic Pro effortlessly takes me up to 45 wpm. The Spark is not that fast, but it does a very nice and smooth job. The design of this key especially appeals to me. The rough cast-iron base, combined with the goldplated mechanical parts on top is what makes it typical Italian. When the key arrived it was really ”fresh”, still smelling of the factory, drilling oil and all. Love that smell....

After a much too long and cold lousy winter at last it's spring again and I can start rebuilding the shack. One of the big advantages of this method is, you get to build a new shack every spring. The FT950 takes the mainstation-position this year. Don't know yet where I'm going to put the TS830.

As you can see in the big pic the CG3000 tuner got a prominent spot. Did some experimentig with the length of the open wire feeders. Got a lot of RF back in the shack at a length of 8 mtrs, so I decided to keep it at the original length of 17 mtrs. Now there's no RF feedback to switch the pc-monitor on and off, hi!
These auto-tuners are a real blessing! Choose your band, hit the cw-key and there you go! No worries and no long dragged tuning carrier on the band anymore. Just one simple dash on the key. No need for anything else anymore!

A happy New Year to all!
This year is almost gone. Just managed to do all the wiring of the G3020 SDR-project (scroll down to learn more) and now I'm waiting to see what is the best solution for the PA-cooler, a large heatsink or the supplied one, which fits snugly in the enclosure I found in the scrapbox of my employer. Basically it will depend on which mode I'm going to use most. CW or Digital, and knowing myself it's going to be CW. So that's decided. The supplied heatsink will do. Now there's only some testing and adjusting to do, and build the whole shebang into the scrap-enclosure. You're not gonna believe your eyes when I'm done!

Activities after the holiday have been building this Tentec 1380, which is a three Watts output CW-only transceiver. Have still got to do all the measurements (exact output, some more aligning etc) but it works great, sofar had qso's with John, LA9CG and Ben, SM7EQL. Amazing how good it works! The receiver is quite sensitive and not very noisy. Only problem I run into is a rather sharp clicking when I use the Vibroplex on this little bugger! But it will get sorted out!

Finally the solution to the oscillator-problem came to me: in all four circuits there was a resistor of 100K. When I cold-measured the values of the components it was rather a shock to detect that there were 100 ohm resistors in stead of 100 K types. This was the major cause of all the irrational behaviour of the oscillators. So carefull restauration of the pcb and the components and some help from Tasa and Nick made my day! At the end of the afternoon I could hear the sweet tone of the 30 mtr oscillator (and all the others, ofcourse!!) So now the building can continue!
Also my Q5-80 now works at 3575,611 mHz, thanks to a gift from PA1FJ, Fred. Thanks Fred!

Sometimes when surfing on the Internet you come across things that don´t look like much. But you know, we´re radio-amateurs and they can´t be reasoned with. So I bought this little qrp kit from Genesis Radio to see if I could build anything at all that would also work. Took a damn long 14 days to get here from ´down under´. Still don´t understand why it has to take this long for an airmail to get here.
Anyway, once I got my greedy hands on it, it was only a matter of a few hours before I was on the air working Jan, PA3CKX on 3560 kHz. Pity though there´s a rather strong AM-carrier exactly on 3560. But Jan could hear my sigs!

So far, so good, as Humphrey Bogart used to say. I can only hope it will get better. In spite of very constructive email-exchange with Tasa, YU1LM who desighed the G3020 (and the G40) there is no progress. But I'll keep on it and will get this thing to work!
There's still one or two things we can test and try out!

More than a month has gone by, so it's high time to write another contribution to the site! The S Match is working just fine. Still trying to determine when to hook up the feeders to the C or to the L.
Just for fun I've done some QRP-experiments.
Tuesday made a number of qso's on 10.116 mHz @ 5 watts from the FT950. Very nice contacts were made, I'm beginning to like the qrp-way a lot!
So now I'm contemplating the building of a qrp-rig. At the same time I'd like to get started with SDR. Let's take a look at some of the possibilities:

All parts for the S Match have arrived, I wound the toroid (first time I did that!), placed the results on a piece of wood and hooked it all up together.

Doing some tuning around with the S-Match and my 2 x 28 mtr dipole I snagged Henk DL/PA0HTT. This was a very nice qso and I got reported rst 579 from a small German village I don't remember.

The variable condensor has capacitance of 2 x 10-500 pf. As you can see in the pics I turned that into 20 - 1000 pf. The roller coil has a maximum induction of about 35 uH. Short testing on 160 meter was very rewarding: no problems to reach swr 1:1!!

Helaas was van het experiment met de vliegende shack niets te horen, niet vanwege condities of afstand, maar door materiaalpech in de Piper. De koptelefoon had het begeven en dan doe je niet veel meer in zo'n lawaaiige omgeving als een eenmotorig vliegtuigje. Jammer!

Veel te doen deze week, veel verbindingen gemaakt met het SRS-Radiokamp in Kootwijkerbroek, o.a. Hans PA3ECT, Cor PA0AM, Louis PA0LCE en anderen. Zaterdag gaat Henk PA0DSD proberen een HF-verbinding te maken met het kamp vanuit een Piper Cub, ook een interessant experiment. Goed luisteren, maar ik denk niet dat er hier in Friesland veel van te horen zal zijn.

Verder arriveerde een nieuwe aanwinst: een mooie rolspoel, bestemd voor de S-Match. Nu alleen nog een ringkern voor de benodigde balun en wat los spul, dan kunnen we los. Ook op de foto de Kenwood TS830S, eindelijk maar toch. Deze set is een van de legendarische onverwoestbare "boat-anchors" alhoewel dat eigenlijk onrecht doet aan deze geweldige set. Bovendien is een IC7800 ook niet bepaald licht te noemen: je zou met die 23 kg gemakkelijk een rubberboot kunnen verankeren.

Gisteravond kwam een droevig QTC via PA0HTT: Wim, PA0CMP is Silent Key. Plotseling en volkomen onverwacht. Vele gezellige qso's met Wim gehad, eerst op 3553, later veelal op 3575 kcs. Een van de oorspronkelijke Morse Mannen. We zullen hem zeer missen op de band.

Alweer een verbetering: de losse lintlijn is nu netjes opgerold. Ik had nog wat pvc regenpijp liggen en gezien op Frits PA0FRI's homepage dat je dat gemakkelijk kunt wegwerken door het op te rollen. Op de twee pijpen die je ziet zit in totaal 10 meter Wireman lintlijn. Op een andere site had ik gezien dat je die lintlijn gewoon los in een soort patatdoos kunt stoppen, maar het bleek wat lastig af te tunen op die manier. Na het oprollen bleek dat dit de aanpassing ten goede komt, het geheel stemt makkelijker af.

Alweer een paar weken verder en antenne-experimenten gaan nog door, al begin ik er langzamerhand in te geloven dat een tuner met twee rolspoelen (zoals de LL-tuner) toch een betere oplossing is. Ook de S-Match van PA0FRI lijkt in dit geval hoge ogen te gooien. Maar eens sneupen naar een goede rolspoel.
Zoals te zien op bijgaande foto's is de kippeladder een stukje uitgebreid. De totale lengte van de kippeladder plus straler is nu 55 meter. En het is een dipool dus heb ik momenteel 110 meter koperdraad in de lucht. Dat moet toch zeker op 160 meter willen werken! Wil ook wel, maar dan de helft, als inverted L (scroll naar beneden voor een tekening). Het rendement is echter niet hoog, ook al omdat er maar een enkele aardelektrode in de grond zit (wel 4 meter diep, overigens)

Hans, PA3ERE suggereerde het gebruik als Toploaded T-antenne: gewoon de feeders bij de tuner aan elkaar knopen. Ook dat is geprobeerd, maar gaf weinig bevredigende signalen af. Ik zag de meter nauwelijks in beweging komen, terwijl de rest van Nederland elkaar rapportjes gaf van s9 + 20 db. Dan weet je het wel. "Nait goud!", zoals ze in Groningen dan plegen op te merken. Maar we blijven proberen, voor elk probleem is er altijd ergens een oplossing. Je moet hem alleen even vinden...

Na een weekje uitwaaien op Terschelling weer terug in de vertrouwde shack. Beetje gewijzigd aan de opstelling van de apparatuur. Nieuw boek gekocht op Terschelling over de zeesleper de Holland. Prachtig boek met veel details over de renovatie van de Holland en wat daarbij komt kijken. Ook een leuke website gevonden over de vrijwilligers die dat werk doen: www.hans-biersteker.com, met een interessant gedeelte over radio's en de marconisten. Kijk op die site ook bij de "Links" als je belangstelling hebt voor maritieme radio en alles daaromheen.

De antenne hangt. Was wel een dagje zwoegen, vanwege de vele takken die in de weg zaten, maar de eerste test-qso's beloven veel voor de toekomst. Eigenlijk is het hier niet van toepassing, maar de signaal-ruisverhouding is stukken beter met een symmetrisch systeem. Meer signaal en minder ruis dus, om misverstanden te vermijden ;-)
De antennedraad bestaat uiteindelijk uit 2 x 45 meter DX Wire type FL van 2 mm dik. Dit resulteerde in een dipool van 2 x 28 mtr en een open lijn van 17 mtr, doorlopend in de middenisolator zodat daar geen kwetsbare soldeerpunten zitten.

Vandaag de Radio-Vlooienmarkt in Tytsjerk bezocht. Vooral 's morgens is het daar altijd erg druk. Het is maar een kleine markt en veel ham's komen er voor de gezelligheid, even bijkletsen etc. En soms doe je verrassende vondsten. Deze keer niet, alleen een verloopplugje gekocht en een kop koffie, dus ik was voor 5 euro klaar. Maar wel veel mensen ontmoet die ik al tijden niet gezien of gesproken had. Daarbij waren er maar liefst drie die op een steenworp afstand wonen! Zo werd het toch nog gezellig.
Het hoofddoel was antenne-litze. Die was er niet te krijgen, dus heb ik het in DL besteld. Het wachten is nu op de post.

De antenne-plannen kristalliseren uit: het ophangpunt zit inmiddels in de boom op 15 meter hoogte. Nu kan de aandacht gericht worden op de antenne zelf, zie de foto met de situatie-schets. De midden-isolator is inmiddels ook gemaakt, uit een kunststof snijplankje van € 1,95! Antennedraad wordt hoogstwaarschijnlijk DX Wire, type F, 2,3 mm dik met isolatie. Maar eerst wil ik nog even kijken wat er op de vlooienmarkt in Tytsjerk (a.s. zaterdag 18-04) wordt aangeboden.

Vanmorgen een email ontvangen uit China, mijn qsl-kaart is aangekomen bij Gordon, BD1ISI. Hij schrijft dat hij er erg blij mee is, het was zijn eerste cw-verbinding op 40 mtr. met PA, dus een dubbele first voor ons beiden! Zijn kaart is onderweg, ben benieuwd.
Alweer een nieuw plan voor een draad-antenne. Ditmaal de meest veelzijdige: 2 x 28 mtr dipool met kippeladdertje. De grote vraag is niet of de hoek van 90 gr. die de beide draden met elkaar maken in het voedingspunt het stralingspatroon zal beinvloeden, maar in welke mate? Als je daarover een mening hebt, dan hoor ik het graag! Mijn emailadres staat onderaan de linkerkolom. (wel even AT en DOT vervangen)

Mijn ontwerpje voor een Inverted L antenne voor de lage banden: 160/80/40 mtr. Als het meezit via de tuner ook geschikt tot en met 6 mtr. Maar hij moet nog gerealiseerd worden, met hulp van de buurman.

Vanmorgen druk geweest in de tuin, het voorjaar is losgebarsten. Tijdens de koffie een leuk cw-qso op 80 mtr. gehad met Han, PA3HCY. Hij bleek in Kollum te wonen, hemelsbreed is dat 12,5 km verderop, hi! Han werkt met een Collins TCS12 met bijbehorende RX. Heel gezellig qso, we hebben het over onze Vibroplex sleutels gehad. Aan het eind meldde zich nog Bas, PA0RTW, ook een bekend Vibroplex-liefhebber! Helaas waren de condities erg slecht. Hier nog een plaatje van de TCS12:

De radioruimte wordt door amateurs vaak aangeduid met de term "SHACK". Mijn eigenlijke shack bevindt zich op het zoldertje van de garage. (zie foto verderop).
Lekker veel ruimte en geen klachten als er weer eens troep is ontstaan door ge-experimenteer. Omdat het de afgelopen winter vrij koud was, is de boel tijdelijk verhuisd naar de huiskamer.

De lente dreigt binnen enige dagen weer los te barsten, dus zo langzamerhand begint het weer te kriebelen en ga ik plannen maken om de shack opnieuw op te bouwen. Dat is trouwens een leuke bijkomstigheid van de verhuizingen: iedere keer kan de boel weer anders (en beter) worden gemaakt.
Inmiddels is er een Kenwood TS 830S aangeschaft. Hij is nog niet binnen want wordt nog nagekeken door de experts. Razend benieuwd hoe dat gaat werken!

CW is short for continuous wave and in modern amateurradio-talk means morse-telegraphy.
